Another important part of your soil quality is the pH.  If your soil is too acidic, or too alkaline, you will have trouble growing healthy plants.  The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 1 being very acidic and 14 being very alkaline.

Testing Your Soil’s pH

There are numerous kits you can purchase from your local Ventura gardening store.  Testing soil is fairly easy.  The best time to test soil is when the soil is good for tilling (slightly moist).  Once you figure out your soil’s pH, you may have to take action to correct it.

Correcting You Soil’s PH

If you soil is too acid, this can be corrected by adding ground limestone.  Use a spreader to apply the lime, and then rake the soil.  Soil preparation dictates the best time to add lime. You probably won’t have to worry about your soil being too alkaline in Ventura.  This usually occurs in arid regions with low rainfall.
