Meditation allows us to relax. By bringing focus to one object or thought, we calm our bodies and mind. Our minds welcome the opportunity to focus on one thing with no distractions. Give your brain a break; it deserves it. After meditation, people often feel renewed and more optimistic. Meditation is a form of mental discipline, as the practice can be quite difficult. If not using any tools (like the TV) to meditate, strong mental discipline is required to steer our minds away from our daily thoughts. Yet once a person is able to do so for even a few minutes, the person can experience a new sense of confidence. There is a realization that we control our mental state. Meditation allows us to better understand ourselves. We are able to step back and observe our mental thought processes. What is the first thought that pops into your head? What thought keeps on coming back over and over again? Are the thoughts continually pessimistic? We can therefore learn about our own mental demons and what aspects of our lives are sources of stress. As the great Bob Marley said, “don’t worry, be happy.” Easier said than done. Yet through meditation we can achieve the ability to relax and let go. Through this state of relaxation and firm mental control, we perform better and are more productive. As one wise men said, “You never get anywhere in a hurry but in trouble.” Meditation helps us resist the temptation to hurry and become anxious. Through meditation, we can learn to control our stress, not let our stress control us. Meditation also frees the mind to explore new mysteries and experience new epiphanies. By releasing our minds of daily, and often stressful, thoughts (bills, work, Christmas shopping), we free our minds to develop insight and wisdom. Meditation allows us to step back. Humans are inherently self-consumed. Although this habit does serve a function, it prevents us from achieving an increased awareness of our surroundings. By meditating, we become aware of the beauty and majesty of our surroundings and realize that we, and our problems, are not the center of the universe. Only registered users can write comments.
